Let’s make a wet palette! 🎨 Have you heard of this? I don’t usually teach people things, but I’m not gatekeeping this one. This is the ultimate trick to keeping your acrylic paint workable. It’s especially helpful if you’re mixing a custom shade or colour, but you don’t need it all at once. You can buy a wet palette, but I had everything I need to make one in my own kitchen, so why not?

“Overwatered” 2026. acrylic on canvas panel I took the reference photo for this painting during a very challenging period in my life. I was visiting friends in Los Angeles in an attempt to save my mental health from the depths of seasonal affective disorder here in Canada, and my endometriosis pain was really taking a toll on me. One morning, walking through the cactus garden at the end of my friends’ street, I saw that all the cacti looked scorched. Among all the varieties in the garden, all but a few had turned black and grey. The ones that still stood tall had decaying spines, and ashen patches. Hoverflies rested lazily, and ants climbed ambitiously on their sad orange flesh. Some were unrecognizable black husks, laying in small heaps between rocks and thriving tall grasses. I thought it was bizarre, as it was February and it hasn’t been particularly hot. And, aren’t cacti made for the heat? Then I realized what had happened. The cacti weren’t scorched, burnt, or dried out. They were dying from overwatering. They couldn’t take the heavy rains LA had been experiencing right before I arrived. The same rainfall that was so heavily celebrated after years of droughts and wildfires… had devastated the cacti. Something about that polarity was so painful and so beautiful at the same time. I was struck by how endlessly unfair and endlessly beautiful our world can be. Overwatered is not your typical garden painting, but I hope it finds someone who appreciates it. -CW

Do you call them woodchucks or groundhogs? I usually say groundhog but @wilbur_the_woodchuck obviously identifies as a woodchuck. Anyway I love these two and they very much brought a smile to my face. I hope they did for you, too! Follow me for more drawings of vids that made me smile. 💋
